Who am I? The story

The story Driven by vision. Defined by experience.

My name is Mikal. NOVU is not a studio — it’s a quiet space I open only when the project feels right.

For me, photography has always been more than work. It’s a way of seeing. A way of noticing light, rhythm and human presence — whether I’m deep inside Filipino culture, documenting family travel for the book, or standing alone on a mountain waiting for the right shift in weather.

I create portraits and visual stories with simplicity, depth and intention. No noise. No unnecessary elements. Just real people, real environments and honest light.

Over the years I’ve worked with global brands, travelled across the Philippines for over 15 years, lived inside local communities, and built a visual identity shaped by contrast, culture and Scandinavian minimalism. That perspective guides everything I create.

NOVU is invitation-only.
Not because of exclusivity for its own sake — but because I choose projects that feel meaningful, personal and aligned with the way I work.

If our vision matches, I look forward to creating something timeless together.
If not, the door stays quietly closed.

Where the Magic Happens Natural Surroundings

I don’t work in a classic studio.
Nature — movement, weather, silence, streets, oceans — is my atelier.

This is where I find the light, mood and atmosphere that shape each portrait into something real. Environments add story. Texture. Honesty. They bring out the parts of people that don’t appear under artificial lamps.

By using real locations and natural light, I create images that feel alive, timeless and deeply personal.
Not staged. Not forced.
Just human presence inside real surroundings — shaped by the moment, not manufactured.

For me, that’s where the magic happens.

Clarity through colour and structure. VISUAL IDENTITY — BEFORE & AFTER

Every image carries a raw story. But editing gives it direction.

My before/after process isn’t about filters or tricks — it’s about balance.
Subtle colour work. Clean highlights. Depth without heaviness.
A Scandinavian visual identity shaped by contrast and calm.

This workflow is part of why NOVU looks the way it does:
sharp, minimal, intentional — and built to last beyond trends.

Less noise. More intention. THE APPROACH

My style is built on clarity and restraint.
Clean lines. Thoughtful framing. Colour that supports emotion — not overwhelms it.

I move slowly. Observe first. Create later.
The goal is always the same: not to fill the frame, but to refine it. To remove what isn’t needed. To give space for the person, the story, the atmosphere.

Whether I’m photographing someone in a quiet alley in Manila, a rooftop in Makati, a coastline in Batangas, or a frozen mountain top in Norway — the approach stays consistent:

Simplicity.
Presence.
Honest light.

This is what defines NOVU.

If we create together, it has to matter. The Final Note

I rarely open NOVU for new projects.
Time is limited, and my focus right now is on writing Philippines From the Inside, and building a long-term creative ecosystem around storytelling, culture and lived experience.

But when a project aligns — when there’s meaning, trust and room for creativity — I open the door.

If that resonates with you, reach out.
If not, the space remains quiet.
By design.
